Welcome to these pages of images and ideas. I hope you will enjoy the images and learn from the links. Of course these art works are for sale. I try to keep my prices low. I basically am most interested in exploring ideas and feelings, not making money. If I wanted money I'd get a paiying job. The vast majority of artists and musicians don't make enough just on there craft to live on. So, if that's the case, why not paint what I feel moved towards, keep the prices low to cover the expenses and clear the walls of my house and studio. If you have any questions, ideas or just ruminations, please email me at hmathis@sprintmail.com. Also, I will be happy to email a price list. Enjoy.

As can be seen from my use of various styles, I am ecletic in temperament. Some ideas are expressed best abstractly, some realistically. My background in math has greatly influenced the hardedge work and my love of jazz and blues influences everything. Until 2 years ago I didn't know where the techniques came from, then I started getting videos from libraries on art and I found an affinity, that I had previously scoffed at, with the New York abstractionists of the 1940's thru 1960's. In graduate school, I basically took individual instruction courses, which meant I painted and sold to my teachers. Rather than having to haul all my supplies to the class, then back to my studio, I just painted and took the work in at the end of the month. It seemed to work for all concerned

Artists of all persuations, if they are open, are influenced by everything they see, hear and feel. Some of my favorites are MWF Turner, Claude Monet, Paul Cezanne, the Russian Suprematists, Kandinsky, Braque, Pollock, DeKooning, Roscenburg, and others.

Bacheloe Five 1964
Acrylic/canvas 18"x24" $150.00

My philosophical influences range, in part, from H.D. Thoreau, Joseph Campbell's writings on mythology, Dr. Max Luschers personality color theory, Carl Jung's theories of archetypes and synchronicity, Lao Tzu's writings in the "Tao Te Ching", to blues and jazz music.
One of Joseph Campbell's ideas was "...you can follow the money, and you may get it, or you can follow your bliss and you may make money". You can buy what you want, except for happiness.
From a 1964 photo of a south Arkansas band I was in. I'm on the drums, still.
